I attended part of elementary school all the way up through graduation here and it has inspired me to never, ever live in the Belt or even Great Falls area ever again. Bullying is a major problem, not just by students, but by staff and coaches as well. Many teachers talk about students they hate in front of their other classes. The art teacher ripped a student's project in half in front of him (and the rest of the class) because he didn't like that student. The high school biology teacher refuses to have classes dissect anything because she would be "grossed out". One of the history/government teachers is unable to separate his right wing political views from his teaching and refuses to accommodate students with disabilities, stating that they just need to try harder or that they're just being lazy. Blatent racism and homophobia is ignored (and sometimes even encouraged) in this environment. Favoritism is rampant in the classrooms where most teachers are either coaches or parents to many of the students. The coaches ignore injuries in their players and push them until they absolutely physically can no longer play. Many students have had to have major surgery due to prolonged sports related injuries and one student recieved a severe head injury that has left him in total care for the rest of his life. Injuries are ignored and those who are forced to drop sports are ridiculed for it. In the coldest months of the winter, our buses were breaking down miles from any business or heated place to shelter in, and the school opted to pay for a new gym floor and scoreboards that we didn't need instead. Religious bias is not separated from classrooms as it should be. In fact, church youth group is allowed to take place during our lunch hour and after school within classrooms and the cafeteria. The senior class dinner is held in church buildings and gendered bibles are handed out during it. Family names are protected more than morals. Our old gym teacher was homophobic, racist, misogynistic, and verbally abusive to his students, but he only received a slap on the wrist for a couple of the more graphic comments. All too often they put sports before academics and children's well-being. There are a handful of great teachers/staff members who deserve much better than this place has to offer. Kyle Paulson, the principal, has turned into a monster. Any teacher who defends a child who is the victim of bullying by a sports kid is either fired or forced to resign. This is a hostile and mentally unhealthy environment for all children. They are either rendered miserable due to severe bullying and/or a lack of being able to fit in, or they become sports kids (oftentimes being the bullies themselves) and develope a very skewed sense of how the world works. The sports kids also are allowed to learn significantly less in school. I witnessed several occasions where a history teacher would tell a student word for word what to write in their essay. The science teacher also overlooked cheating during exams until it became so obvious that she could not ignore it. The only teacher I can say was perfectly unbiased and prepared me for college was the high school English teacher. If you have the means, send your kids to Great Falls for school instead. Don't make them suffer in this hell hole.
